Jess Jess Chamberlain, Sunset home writer, recently upgraded from a 168 square-foot studio to a San Francisco apartment she considers a mansion because (a) it has a living room and (b) that living room fits a full-sized couch. When she's not daydreaming about having a backyard or, let's be honest, even a teeny balcony, you can find her scoping home decor shops near and far (and in cyberspace) for what's hot and innovative, but timeless. She entertains co-workers with scouting trip adventure stories which include talking her way through a Golden Gate Bridge toll booth when she'd misplaced her wallet. Jess has also been known to serve as guinea pig for beginner Sunset garden stories and considers herself the target audience for die-hard houseplants. Always on the hunt for small-space-living miracles and unique home design, her current obsession is eco-friendly decor.
Allison Arieff is Editor at Large for Sunset Magazine. She also writes a bi-monthly column on design for the New York Times. The former editor of Dwell Magazine and author of books Prefab, Spa, and Trailer Travel, Allison is passionate about all things design-and-architecture related. Her current obsession, though, apart from her 2-and-a-half year old, is her edible landscape also known as her backyard. She and her husband have planted strawberries, broccoli, green beans, edamame, yellow peppers, beets, Kaleidoscope carrots, cantaloupe, basil, oregano, and 8 varieties of heirloom tomatoes. The family is looking forward to harvesting--and to all that money they'll save at Whole Foods! When she's not writing (or thinking about what she's supposed to be writing), she reads, cooks, shops, and enjoys camping out in the family's Airstream up near Point Reyes, California.
